Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is informed by diverse work experiences across Canada, Mozambique, South Africa, and the UK. I have taught university students and led workshops on human rights, women’s issues, economics, poverty, and public policy. Working with adults from varied backgrounds—including those facing language barriers and different literacy levels—has taught me to recognise each student’s unique potential and challenges. I understand that learning difficulties often stem from broader societal and intersectional factors like racism, sexism, ableism, and economic hardship. I also prioritise respecting cultural contexts, beliefs, languages, and life experiences beyond Western frameworks.

Curriculum Design: I have designed courses/modules over the last 20 years, ranging from overviews of IR & IPE theories, to examining African global politics, the rise of the BRICS+ and emerging powers, China and the Belt & Road Initiative in the Indian Ocean, to a critical analysis of global development and global governance.

Academic Tutoring: Personalised support to help students (individually or within a seminar/class setting) understand course material, develop their critical analytical thinking skills, advance powerful arguments and demonstrate supporting evidence. Tutoring focuses on clarifying concepts, reviewing content, and guiding students through assignments.

De-centring Western perspectives: Western-centric frameworks limit understanding of complex global issues, especially related to history, culture, politics, and knowledge production. Analyse why certain texts (usually written by White men) are deemed ‘essential’ while others are excluded. Examine knowledge origins: highlight how non-Western societies pioneered fields like mathematics, astronomy, and medicine. Challenge linear progress: Challenge standard histories as progressive, in a straight line moving from classical antiquity directly to modern Western democracy.
